Becoming a Mother

Becoming a new mother brings a profound shift in identity, responsibility, and daily life that many women are not fully prepared for. New moms often face an intense mental load, managing feeding schedules, sleep routines, household responsibilities, and relationship changes while feeling pressure to do it all and appear capable. It is common to struggle with asking for help, setting boundaries with family, navigating differing parenting expectations, and maintaining a sense of self outside of motherhood. Research shows that new mothers frequently experience perfectionism, heightened self-criticism, decision fatigue, and strain in their relationships as roles shift.

Many of the mothers I work with are not only looking for a space to process, but also for clear, practical tools they can use in real time when things feel overwhelming.

In therapy, you will learn tools such as:

  • Emotional regulation strategies to manage anxiety, irritability, and overwhelm

  • Ways to reduce the mental load and organize daily responsibilities more realistically

  • Communication tools to express needs and ask for help without guilt

  • Boundary-setting skills with partners, family, and support systems

  • Strategies to navigate intrusive thoughts and self-criticism

  • Grounding techniques to help you stay present during stressful moments

  • Practical ways to reconnect with yourself outside of motherhood

Therapy for new mothers provides both a supportive space to process these changes and actionable strategies you can apply in your daily life. This work helps you move from feeling overwhelmed and constantly trying to keep up to feeling more grounded, supported, and confident in both yourself and your role as a mother.
